H2
IN A WORLD WHERE SUVS HAVE BEGUN TO LOOK LIKE THEIR OWNERS, complete with love handles and mushy seats, the H2 SUV proves that there is still one out there that can drop and give you 20. And with a more spacious, comfortable interior and a host of standard features, the H2 strikes a perfect balance between interior comfort, on-road capability and off-road capability.

INNOVATION
TRACTION CONTROL
Power is nothing without control. That’s why the 2009 H2 offers extraordinary control in the form of a two-speed, electronically controlled, full-time 4WD system. This system incorporates a strong transfer case, unique in that it offers 4 High Locked and true 4 Low Locked ranges that make the H2 capable of adapting to all types of surfaces at the touch of a button.
Working in tandem with the 4WD to give you even more control over your H2. Whether off-roading or simply on slippery road surfaces, TCS continually monitors the rotational speed of each wheel. If one wheel is spinning more than the others, TCS applies braking pressure to the spinning wheel to help it regain composure and transfers available torque to the wheels that have traction. Using this system, an H2 with three spinning wheels can still move forward, even on an upward grade of 10%.
OPERATIONAL MODES:
4 HI OPEN
For normal everyday driving on dry road surfaces. Allows the front and rear axles to move at different speeds with a 40/60 front-to-rear power split.
4 HI LOCKED
For semi-slippery surfaces like snow, light sand, gravel or wet areas. This mode locks the front and rear axles together for additional traction and has a 50/50 front-to-rear power split.
4 LOW LOCKED
For severe off-pavement use. This mode locks the front and rear axles together and engages a reduction of the gear ratio to 2.64:1 for controlled rock and obstacle climbing and also has 50/50 front-to-rear power split.
4 LOW LOCKED & REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL LOCKED
For optimal slow-speed capability while climbing large rocks or steep grades, the rear differential locks the rear axle shafts together sending equal torque to both rear wheels.
NEUTRAL
The 5th mode that permits flat towing of the H2 behind another vehicle.

SUSPENSION
FRONT
The H2 uses an independent torsion bar front suspension that is excellent on-road and incorporates features that make it even more impressive off-road. High-strength monotube gas-charge shock absorbers (known for durability) grace the front suspension of the H2. This system incorporates two rubber cushions called "jounce bumpers" that absorb jolts under normal off-road conditions.
As things get rougher and suspension travel increases, a frame-mounted urethane bumper prevents the suspension from hitting the frame. However, the shock absorbers themselves have integrated bump stop rings that slow the suspension’s travel before it needs to strike this final cushion.
In addition to a 4,000 lb. axle capacity, the front suspension has a large 36 mm diameter tubular front stabilizer bar that works in conjunction with a standard tubular 30 mm diameter rear stabilizer bar to help minimize body roll when cornering. The result is a smooth ride, with front-end control that adapts to changing terrain, both on- and off-road, that maximizes traction in all conditions.
REAR
The standard rear suspension on the H2 features a five-link trailing arm, coil springs, and a stabilizer bar. The spring rate is variable from a soft on-road rate, through a transitional rate, to a stiff off-road rate that helps prevent bump and impact input forces from transmitting into the H2’s body.
Perhaps the most eyebrow-raising aspect of he H2’s rear suspension is the solid rear axle. Consider this in the context of off-roading. Say you’re crossing a field strewn with boulders with an ordinary truck. As the back end of your truck rolls over a rock, independent suspension allows the rear tires to rise, but leaves the rear-end housing where it is, and subsequently vunerable to a rock strike. But the H2’s solid rear axle rises with the rear tires, lifting the rear so you can continue on your way without having felt a thing.
ONSTAR®
DRIVING CONFIDENCE
See how OnStar® is giving drivers greater confidence on the road.
Standard for one year on the HUMMER H2 is the state-of-the-art OnStar system. First and foremost, OnStar means safety. With built-in Automatic Crash Response your vehicles OnStar® system automatically connects to an OnStar Advisor and provide your H2's exact location, along with critical crash details such as severity and type of crash. The Advisor asks whether you need assistance and can request emergency help to be sent right to you, right away — even if you are unable to ask for it.
But, we hope that never happens. So we made sure OnStar would still be useful to you in a multitude of other ways. For example, if you ever make the unfortunate mistake of locking your keys inside your HUMMER, you can call the OnStar toll free and an Advisor can send a signal to unlock your doors remotely.† If your "check engine" light ever illuminates or you suspect trouble, at the touch of a button on your H2’s rear-view mirror, your OnStar Advisor can help by running a diagnostic check of your engine, even while you’re still driving. Or, if you've reported your H2 stolen, OnStar can assist authorities with its quick recovery by using GPS technology.
Also, with OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation,* Getting driving directions has never been this easy. It's the simplest and smartest navigation system. And its simple because it only takes one button push to get your directions; PUSH the Blue Button, TELL the Advisor your destination, LISTEN to the voice guided directions that are delivered as your need them, ARRIVE at your destination. And, Since OnStar is constantly updating its mapping database you never have to worry about out-dated maps or DVD's, and a live OnStar advisor is there to help you.
OnStar can help you stay connected with OnStar Hands-Free Calling,‡ which allows you to make and receive hands-free calls in your H2 while keeping your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.
AND WITH YOUR NEW H2 YOU WILL RECEIVE THE ONSTAR® DIRECTIONS AND CONNECTIONS SERVICE PLAN.
For more information call, press your blue OnStar button or call 1-888-4-ONSTAR or visit www.onstar.com for details and system limitations.
*OnStar acts as a link to emergency service providers. Visit www.onstar.com or call 1.888.4.ONSTAR (1.888.466.7827) for details and system limitations.
†Success varies with conditions. Stolen Vehicle Slowdown is available on select 2009 GM vehicles. Visit www.onstar.com for details.
‡OnStar Hands-Free Calling requires a Hands-Free Calling enabled vehicle, existing OnStar service contract and prepaid minutes or enrollment in a shared minutes plan. Not available in certain markets. Calls may be made to the U.S. and Canada only.
BRAKING SYSTEM
ABS
The four-channel Antilock Braking System (ABS), standard on the H2, allows enhanced steering control under extreme braking conditions, without tire “lock up." An example of what makes this system so unique is how it permorms on gravel roads. After heavy rains, gravel can develop certain patterns. The H2’s brakes can recognize these surfaces and react accordingly. Bringing you to a controlled stop.
DYNAMIC REAR PROPORTIONING
Another example of the H2’s advanced braking ability is Dynamic Rear Proportioning. This system modulates the rear brake pressure as needed to ensure that braking is balanced between the rear and front brakes. Furthermore, it helps balance wear and prevents the nose of the H2 from driving downward when braking hard. It’s specifically designed to work seamlessly all the time, without you ever being aware of it while sitting comfortably behind the wheel.
LEFT FOOT BRAKING
The 2008 H2 is engineered to be more responsive to "Left Foot Braking," a technique that allows drivers even better control of their H2 off-road. Usually Antilock Brakes (ABS) and the Traction Control System (TCS) function independently despite sharing the same space. The engineers designed a system that allows brake operation (under light application) and TCS to work at the same time.
This is best seen in a rock crawling scenario. A driver—while in 4 low lock—can simultaneously use the right foot to control the throttle and the left foot to control the brake while TCS continues to manage torque across the axels. This allows the driver to control the vehicle ’s speed over rocks, while engine torque still gets to the wheels that have the best traction.
ON THE OUTSIDE

PROTECTION
BUMPERS
Like many other H2 components, the bumpers are unusually large and hefty. They also have a two-sectional design to help reduce weight while still providing optimum protection.
The front bumper also includes large, military-style retrieval loops. The rear bumper includes tow loops which can also serve as tie-downs and both bumpers have access holes for the hitch receivers. The front receiver accommodates a winch, that can be installed just like a trailer hitch. The front receiver, like the rear receiver, also accommodates a regular Class 3 trailer hitch, providing additional flexibility by allowing you, to nose a boat into a garage.
SKID PLATE
Nobody likes to resort to it, but sometimes a skid plate is the only language boulders understand.
That’s why you’ll find a 4mm thick, stamped-aluminum front engine shield that runs from the front bumper of the H2 right back to the transmission. It angles prominently at the front, with the H2 logo embossed just below the bumper. A ladder-type shield (1'' diameter, tubular steel) helps protect the transmission and the exhaust system’s two catalytic converters.
A third, high-tensile strength, galvanized steel shield helps protect the transfer case.
ROCKER PANEL PROTECTION
The rocker panels are large, standard, black painted steel tubes, running along each side of the vehicle to help protect its lower body and door panels against rocks and stumps. The high-strength structural pieces bolt right into the frame with heavy brackets and are designed to withstand off-road impacts from beneath or from side angles.

FRAME
To build a HUMMER, a strong foundation is a must. The H2 uses a welded ladder-type frame with full-length, box-section side rails and a three-piece modular design consisting of front, middle, and rear sections.
FRONT SECTION
The front section is hydro-formed, making it strong enough to support a 9,000-lb winch in the integral receiver mount. This also allows you to affix a trailer hitch, so you can easily "nose" a trailer into a garage or parking space.
MID FRAME
The mid-section is a fabricated and welded stamped-steel box segment that helps minimize vibrations for a smooth ride.
REAR FRAME
The hydro-formed, short rear section—reinforced to handle the weight of a fully loaded vehicle—comes with a standard, integral trailer hitch receiver certified to tow 8,200 lbs. The end result is an immensely strong frame with a long wheelbase and a wide, balanced stance. When combined with full underbody and rocker panel protection, you can get to almost anywhere and beyond and back.
ON THE INSIDE
INTERIOR
The H2’s interior seamlessly compliments its improved on-road performance. Once behind the wheel, you’ll encounter a host of new features designed to make driving a pleasure. The instrument, door trim, and center infotainment panels are all organized, accessible and easy to use.
The H2 has an auxiliary rear heating and cooling system with five overhead vents that enhance heating or cooling for rear-seat passengers. Rear-seat passenger controls are located on the back of the center console.

TRAILERING
THE H2 HAS A TOWING CAPACITY OF 8,200 LB. ITS FULL-TIME 4WD TRANSFER CASE SENDS POWER TO THE FRONT AND REAR, ALLOWING THE H2 TO TOW EVEN IN THE TOUGHEST SITUATIONS.
Trailer tongue weight should be 10%-15% of total loaded trailer weight, up to 1,000 lb. Do not exceed the maximum allowable tongue weight for your vehicle. Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR), which is the total allowable weight of the completely loaded vehicle and trailer including any passengers, cargo, equipment and conversions, is 15,000 lb. If you’ll be pulling a trailer that, when loaded, will weigh more than 5,000 lb., be sure to use a properly mounted, weight distributing hitch and sway control of the proper size. If your trailer weighs more than 2,000 lb. loaded then it needs its own brakes, and they must be adequate. Trailer weight ratings are calculated assuming a base vehicle, except for any option(s) necessary to achieve the rating, plus driver. The weight of other optional equipment, passengers and cargo will reduce the maximum trailer weight your vehicle can tow. See your HUMMER dealer for additional details.
