2009 HUMMER H3T
SEE MORE. DO MORE.
Introducing the 2009 HUMMER H3T: a supremely customizable pickup that also happens to be a HUMMER. Not only is the H3T the latest edition from the maker of the most capable-off-road vehicles in the world, it is simply the most capable versatile HUMMER ever built.
"H3T Alpha receives 2009 Automotive Excellence Award."
Popular MechanicsHUMMER SHINES AT THE POPULAR MECHANICS 2009 AUTOMOTIVE EXCELLENCE AWARDS
Popular Mechanics auto department spent the past 12 months evaluating just about every new automotive model on race tracks, two-lane roads, and muddy trails around the world. They sifted through the stats and debated their findings. From that, they decided that the new HUMMER H3T was worthy of a Popular Mechanics 2009 Automotive Excellence Award.
Here's what they had to say about the most versatile HUMMER ever:
"When we first heard that HUMMER's new H3T comes with the option of Eaton electronic locking differentials in each axle, we got excited. Locking differentials allow true four-wheel drive. And during a recent test in Moab, Utah, those differentials, part of the Alpha's off-road package, really proved their worth. Locked in 4x4 low, we slowly made our way through a stony maze of crumbly sandstone vertical drops and steep climbs. Thanks to the HUMMER's stout drivetrain, the whole experience was surpris-ingly effortless. But there are plenty of features that make this truck a versatile tool on pavement, too. The 5-foot-long bed has 33.5 cu. ft. of cargo volume. And thanks to the Alpha's V8 torque, the H3T can tow 5,900 pounds. As capable as the H3T is in the dirt, it's that pickup bed, roomy interior, and nearly full-size-pickup-truck towing capacity that will draw in the mainstream haulers. But when it's time for some 4x4 recreation, those lockers are there if you need them."
HUMMER SHOWS A TRIO OF H3-BASED CONCEPTS AND PROJECTS AT THE 2008 SEMA SHOW
The desert surrounding Las Vegas has long been the inspiration of off-road enthusiasts.LAS VEGAS - The desert surrounding Las Vegas has long been the inspiration of off-road enthusiasts. HUMMER is the ultimate expression of off-road capability and it comes to Vegas and the 2008 SEMA Show with a trio of special vehicles guaranteed to quicken the pulse of anyone whose vacation plans include destinations like Moab or Baja.
HUMMER introduces two concepts, a new, pre-runner-style H3T outfitted with a raft of performance and appearance accessories, and the H3 X Concept - a proposal for the ultimate H3 X. The third vehicle is a modified H3 Alpha that was built by Four Wheeler Magazine as an ongoing project detailed in several issues and online.
"HUMMER has always been about unmatched capability and that's exactly what these concept vehicles deliver," said James Taylor, HUMMER CEO. "More importantly, they are based in reality with mostly bolt-on components attainable by any enthusiast who wants them. They are more than concepts; they're thought starters for enthusiasts who want to express themselves via their H3 or H3T."
While none of these specialized HUMMERs is targeted for production, they incorporate Genuine HUMMER Accessories components and other aftermarket parts that are on the market today, allowing enthusiasts to replicate much the concept vehicles' attitude and enhanced capability.
H3T Weekend Warrior
The H3T Weekend Warrior concept demonstrates the added extreme capability and functionality that can be accomplished with the H3T and a few weekends in the garage. Enhanced performance under the hood and from the suspension is due to the development work of HUMMER's off-road engineers and the technology transfer from HUMMER's championship-winning racing program.
Starting with a new H3T Alpha, engineers added nearly 70 horsepower to its 5.3L V-8 via components available through GM Performance Parts. They include LS2 cylinder heads (part number 12576063), a higher-lift camshaft (part number 12574519) and supporting components. Also enhancing performance is a custom, 3.5-inch exhaust system.
Taking a note from the playbook of the HUMMER stock-class race program, the H3T rides on 35-inch-tall BFGoodrich Baja T/A tires mounted on HUMMER Accessories 20-inch wheels. The concept also uses racing-proven stock and aftermarket suspension components, including Light Racing JounceShocks and 2-inch-diameter Rod Hall Racing piggyback reservoir-type performance shocks. The modified suspension improves the H3T's inherent off-road capability, making it the ideal high-speed desert chase truck. There is also a set of high-performance disc brakes from DBA.
To complete a weekend desert-escape, the H3T carries a KTM 450 SX-F dirt bike mounted with the H3T's cargo management system. The vehicle also wears other parts available from HUMMER Accessories that enhance function, including a bed extender and carry-off cargo boxes.
Additionally, the Baja Orange Metallic custom paint is highlighted by essential HUMMER accessories, including roof-mounted and grille-mounted off-road lamps, a body-color upper grille and custom hood graphics. The lower grille, mirror caps, door handles and fuel door have a satin-metal finish. Inside is a custom, black leather-trimmed cabin with orange accent stitching and carbon fiber instrument panel accents.
H3 X Concept
The HUMMER H3 X Alpha is a stylish and capable vehicle straight from the factory, but the H3 X Concept takes style and exclusivity to the next level. Production equipment includes bright roof crossbows; chrome fuel filler door, assist steps and brush guard; body-color grille and spare tire cover; 18-inch wheels and embroidered seat headrests.
The H3 X Concept builds on those features with the following:
- New 18-inch wheels with unique finish
- All-terrain 35-inch-tall tires
- Black chrome finish on exterior chrome components, including an exclusive black chrome hood louver
- Body-color rear bumper extensions
- Clear turn signal and side repeater lenses
The exterior is painted a distinctive Canyon Metallic color from PPG that is complemented brilliantly by the black chrome details and 18-inch wheels. The interior features black leather trim on the seats, console armrest, door armrests and shift knob that is accented with orange stitching. It also features custom mats with orange piping and a headrest DVD entertainment system that is available from HUMMER Accessories.
Powering the H3 X Concept is the Alpha model's 5.3L V-8 engine that delivers 300 horsepower (224 kW) and 320 lb.-ft. of torque (434 Nm). It is partnered with a four-speed automatic transmission and enables great off-road driving control and a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds (2,721 kg) - enough to haul a trailer packed with a weekend's worth of dirt bikes, camping gear and more.
H3 Alpha Four Wheeler Project Trailhugger
Partnering with HUMMER, Four Wheeler Magazine built an H3 Alpha with an all-business demeanor and greater off-road capability, while retaining daily-driver comfort and fuel economy.
The project, dubbed "Trailhugger," started by "de-glossing" the H3. That entailed painting the chrome and bright trim flat black and modifying the factory's shiny Victory Red clear coat paint job with a special PPG flattening agent mixed with clear to give it a satin appearance. The editors also added HUMMER's brush guard, roof lighting and rocker protection accessories.
After that, Four Wheeler swapped in a set of nitrogen-charged, 2-inch-diameter Rod Hall Racing piggyback reservoir-type performance shocks and Light Racing JounceShocks. The editors also installed a set of GT Inc. Simulock 16-inch wheels - painted flat black to match the rest of the exterior theme. They're factory-style HUMMER wheels with a simulated bead lock accent on the perimeter. The wheels were mounted on the H3 with a set of BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 LT285/75R16 tires. The editors chose not to give the H3 a body lift, preferring to explore its capabilities with the stock ride height.
Additional modifications in the ongoing project include a Gobi Stealth roof rack with a custom, wireless remote-operated perimeter lighting system (with 10 PIAA 2100XT lamps) using components from Directed Electronics; a Warn XD9000 winch with winchline.com's synthetic rope and hawse fairlead; DeFelice Offroad Innovations winch mount system and Up Armor skid plate.
The 5.3L V-8 is stock, but Four Wheeler added a MagnaFlow after-cat exhaust system. Most modifications and upgrades to the H3 were handled by Attitude Performance in Arlington Heights, Ill.
Progress of the Trailhugger project continues in the pages of Four Wheeler and a complementing blog: blogs.fourwheeler.com, where editor Ken Brubaker regularly writes about the H3's upgrades and its performance as a workhorse for the magazine.
INTRODUCING THE 2009 HUMMER H3T
Introducing the 2009 HUMMER H3T. HUMMER is bringing its iconic style and unmatched capa-bility to the truck market with the 2009 H3T.HUMMER is bringing its iconic style and unmatched capability to the truck market with the 2009 H3T. The H3T is descended from the architecture of the popular H3, but features a crew cab and a separate five-foot-long (1.5 meters) bed.
Bigger than a midsize truck and smaller than a full-size truck, the H3T is carving out its own niche in the market. It is true to its HUMMER DNA, built with the attributes expected of a HUMMER, including exceptional off-road capability and a premium interior that is as functional as it is comfortable. It offers the combination of truck versatility as well as HUMMER off-road prowess.
The H3T stands apart from other trucks in its segment with its signature HUMMER off-road capability. It is the only midsize truck to come standard with full-time four-wheel drive, 32-inch tires and functional skid shields. It is also the only midsize truck to offer front and rear locking differentials, as well as 33-inch tires.
The H3T is offered in four trim levels, including five-cylinder models and the popular V8-powered H3T Alpha edition, which can also tow an impressive 5,900 pounds (2,676 kg). Production is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2008 at GM's Shreveport, La., assembly plant, with vehicles arriving at HUMMER dealerships shortly thereafter. HUMMER will sell the H3T in North America, Europe and the Middle East.
DESIGN
Like all HUMMER models, the H3T has a purposeful design. Its consistent and iconic styling cues include a wide, aggressive stance, a low roofline and high beltline, and large off-road tires. The wide, seven-slot grille and round headlamps mounted in square housings are signature HUMMER design elements.
The crew cab body shares H3 styling and components from the B-pillar forward, while the rear section of the cab and the separate bed are unique to the H3T. The five-foot bed is similar in design and function to GM's recently redesigned full-size trucks, including an easily removable tailgate and provisions for a bed-rail accessory system. A full-size spare tire is mounted beneath the bed.
The bed is sized to carry a wide range of popular outdoor necessities, from hauling motocross bikes to Baja, a quad to camp, or backcountry gear to the trailhead. One of the industry's largest portfolios of accessories complements the H3T's bed, offering different cargo management options to suit all of those lifestyle interests.
ACCESSORIES
One of the industry's broadest portfolios of vehicle accessories has been developed for the H3T. Centered on active lifestyles, items such as removable and lockable bed-mounted storage boxes, an adjustable bike chock that can be used to help secure mountain bikes or motorcycles, and a bed extender make full use of the standard bed-rail cargo management system. A range of additional accessories that improves off-road capabilities, provides passenger entertainment, and enhances exterior styling is also available. There are more than 75 HUMMER Genuine Accessories offered.
In addition to the factory-developed accessory portfolio, HUMMER has partnered with top automotive aftermarket companies to develop more than 50 Officially Licensed HUMMER Accessories - a first for the brand. A variety of exterior enhancements, such as a Slant Back Bed Cover, hard tonneau covers, and a winch are offered, along with cargo management solutions such as the BedSlide and bed divider, offering countless possibilities to personalize the H3T.
INTERIOR
The H3T's crew cab cabin offers a 60/40-split rear bench seat that folds flat for increased cargo-carrying options. The cabin's layout is essentially identical to the acclaimed H3 SUV, with premium materials and attention to detail that give the vehicle a functional yet refined aesthetic.
Standard amenities also include air conditioning, power locks, power windows, and remote keyless entry. An AM/FM radio with CD is standard and a premium Monsoon audio system is available. XM Satellite Radio also comes standard and includes three months of trial service.
HUMMER's Rear Vision system and a navigation system are available. The Rear Vision system uses a camera mounted on the rear bumper, directly above the trailer hitch mount, to provide a view of objects directly behind the vehicle. Also, the safety and security of OnStar is standard, with Turn-By-Turn Navigation and hands-free Bluetooth connectivity available.
POWERTRAIN
Standard in the H3T is the powerful Vortec 3.7L I-5 with dual overhead cams and variable valve timing. This inline five-cylinder engine offers an excellent combination of power and efficiency, delivering 239 horsepower (180 kW) at 5600 rpm* and 241 lb.-ft. of torque (328 Nm) at 4600 rpm. It is backed by a five-speed, manual transmission or an available four-speed, electronically controlled automatic.
The H3T Alpha's 5.3L engine is a powerful and efficient member of GM's legendary small-block V8 family. It is rated at 300 horsepower (224 kW)* and 320 lb.-ft. of torque (434 Nm).* An aluminum cylinder block is used with the H3 Alpha's engine. It helps reduce overall mass and maintains a more desirable front-to-rear weight balance.
A Hydra-Matic 4L60 electronically controlled, four-speed automatic transmission is paired with the 5.3L engine. Flat towing is enabled on all H3 and H3T models.
CHASSIS
The H3T's frame and suspension system are based on a stretched version of the H3 SUV's chassis and suspension - the same race- proven design found on Baja 1000-winning stock-class race trucks. The wheelbase measures 134.2 inches (3,409 mm) - 22 inches (86 mm) longer than the H3 SUV.
A ladder-type frame is the truck's foundation and it has a modular, three-piece design that incorporates fully boxed components for outstanding strength and stiffness. An independent SLA torsion bar front suspension and multileaf Hotchkiss-type rear suspension are used. There are two suspension packages available:
Z85 Heavy-Duty Handling and Trailering - This standard suspension delivers an excellent balance of on-highway comfort and off-road capability. It includes 32-inch all-terrain tires mounted on 16-inch, smoke-color steel wheels, specially tuned heavy-duty shocks, and either a 4.56-ratio (3.7L) or 4.10-ratio (5.3L) rear axle.
Off-Road Adventure - Designed for more aggressive off-road performance, this optional suspension package includes taller, 33-inch tires, specifically tuned shocks, locking front and rear differentials, 4.03:1 low-range gearing in the transfer case, and industry-leading crawl ratios of either 68.9 with the manual transmission or 56.2 with the automatic.
To support the torque output of the 5.3L V8, the H3T Alpha's front differential case is made of cast iron; other models feature an aluminum case. V8-powered vehicles also receive higher torsion bar rates to support the increased mass and specific shock valving. The chassis and suspensions were validated in real-world testing on off-road trails in Moab, Utah, the Rubicon Trail in California, and other challenging off-road venues.
OFF-ROAD CAPABILITY
The H3T lives up to HUMMER's legendary off-road reputation, with best-in-class extreme off-road capability.
Highlights include:
- Ability to climb a 60-percent grade and traverse a 40-percent side slope
- Exceptional 10.2-inch (285 mm) ground clearance (with 33-inch tires)
- 38.7-degree approach angle and 30.6-degree departure angle (with 33-inch tires)
- Segment-first available front- and rear-locking differentials
- Standard HUMMER Hill Hold Assist for improved hill ascension
For most lifestyles, there's almost nothing the H3T can't handle. It's a truck with HUMMER's indisputable capability.
Complementing the features that enable the H3T's impressive off-road prowess are a host of first-class protective elements, including four standard skid shields: a front shield, an oil-pan shield/front-axle shield, a transfer case shield, and a fuel tank shield.
SAFETY
Continuing HUMMER's tradition of delivering a broad range of safety systems, the H3T offers the following standard features:
- Dual frontal air bags with GM's passenger sensing system
- Head curtain side-impact air bags
- StabiliTrak electronic vehicle stability control system
- Four-wheel ABS with traction control
- Tire pressure monitoring system
- LATCH rear child seat anchors
- OnStar with one-year Safe & Sound service
The H3T was also designed for vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility in the event of a crash, and its rigid body structure provides good passenger protection

The highly anticipated 2009 H3T has roused people's curiosities. See what the critics have to say.The highly anticipated 2009 H3T has roused people's curiosities. See what the critics have to say about this capable new truck from HUMMER.
"This is the truck for serious rock hounds who work their truck hard during the week and even harder on the weekends. Jeep and Suzuki wish they had this truck."
- PickupTruck.com
"Two days behind the wheel of this new HUMMER pickup has shown me just how good a vehicle this is. It's ideal for those who want that HUMMER look without sacrificing anything in utility value and performance."
- Bruce Smith, Truck Trend
"Based on the H3 we all know and love, it has even more to love with 14 inches of stretched frame and an honest-to-goodness full size cargo box measuring 59.3 inches in length and 50.5 inches in width (both measurements at floor)."
- Ken Brubaker, Four Wheeler
"We, however, know a good thing when we see it (though many of you might disagree). And considering how the H3T is sporting an elongated wheelbase and a five-foot long bed, it remains one of a few significant unveilings here in Chi-town."

HUMMER HX CONCEPT
HUMMER introduces the future of off-road vehicles with the HX concept.YOUNG DESIGNERS SHAPE FUTURE OF HUMMER THROUGH HX CONCEPT
The HUMMER HX concept is the product of three new innovative minds at GM, designers David Rojas, Min Young Kang and Robert Jablonski. Fresh out of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, the three designers' first test at GM was to design a fun, nimble and innovative HUMMER concept that would provide a vision for the future design of off-road vehicles. No small task, but one they completed in time to unveil at the 2008 North American International Auto Show.
While sketching and sculpting together in the HUMMER studio, the recent graduates drew upon the creative energy of each other. Their collaboration inspired the HUMMER HX concept, which presents extraordinary efficiency without sacrificing the unique essence of the HUMMER brand, the world's most capable off-road vehicles.
After three months of sketching and sculpting, each designer had the opportunity to present scale clay models to Bob Lutz, GM Vice Chairman, and Ed Welburn, Vice President of Global Design and Product Planning, who chose which design would ultimately become the HX concept.
In its final concept form, the E-85* FlexFuel capable HUMMER HX embodies the off road spirit of HUMMER in a fully customizable package. The HX offers an open-air driving experience by featuring a pair of removable roof panels above the driver and front passenger. Additionally, the HX is complete with a modular, removable rear roof assembly enabling a quick conversion from a closed vehicle to an open vehicle SUT. It also features a slant back assembly removable doors and fender flairs.
The young design team looks forward to showing the world their efforts at the 2008 North American International Auto Show.

J.D. Power and Associates Reports: Lexus Ranks Highest in Sales Satisfaction as Industry Achieves Record High Results For a Second Consecutive Year
Salesperson's Explanation of New-Vehicle Value Can Dramatically Increase Satisfaction, Particularly When Customer Spends More than Budgeted
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 14 November 2007 — Lexus improves since 2006 to rank highest in customer satisfaction with the new-vehicle sales process, as the industry records overall improvement and achieves a record high for a second consecutive year, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) StudySM released today.
The study, now in its 21st year, is a comprehensive analysis of the new-vehicle purchase experience. Overall customer satisfaction is measured based on five factors: dealership facility, salesperson, paperwork/finance process, delivery process and vehicle price.
Lexus ranks highest in satisfying buyers with the new-vehicle sales process, achieving an SSI score of 897 on a 1,000-point scale, and improving by 10 points from 2006. Following Lexus in the rankings are HUMMER, Jaguar, Lincoln and Mercedes-Benz, respectively, rounding out the top five nameplates. For a second consecutive year, the industry achieves a record high overall SSI score, improving by 5 points to 852 from the previous record of 847 set in 2006.
"Lexus improves by four rank positions from 2006, which is a gain driven primarily by increased customer delight with the dealership facility, salesperson performance and vehicle price," said Tom Gauer, senior director of automotive retail research at J.D. Power and Associates. "For example, Lexus salespeople show particular concern for helping customers stay within their budgets, choosing the right vehicle for their needs, as well as for making the negotiation process clear and understandable. HUMMER receives a score of 895, up by 21 points from 2006, and improves notably in the vehicle price and paperwork/finance process."
The study finds 44 percent of new-vehicle buyers report spending more than they planned for their new vehicle. These customers provide satisfaction scores that average 67 points less than customers who say they spent within the amount they had budgeted. However, a salesperson who carefully explains the vehicle's features and demonstrates its value can more than compensate for this decrease in satisfaction.
"While all new-vehicle buyers hope to get a good deal, customers are receptive to spending more than they originally budgeted provided that the salesperson does a good job of educating the customer about the features and benefits that they are receiving," said Gauer. "Customers are looking to the salesperson to help them buy a vehicle that fits their budget, but they are certainly open to spending more if the salesperson can successfully convey the value of the vehicle."
The study also finds that customers whose expectations are exceeded during the sales process are much more likely to return to the dealership for customer-paid service work. Approximately 61 percent of customers who described their sales experience as "above expectations" say that they will definitely return to the dealership for paid service, compared with 37 percent of customers who say that their experience merely met their expectations.
The 2007 Sales Satisfaction Index Study is based on responses from 38,654 new-vehicle buyers who registered their vehicles in May 2007.

COURAGEOUS KIDS
Courageous kids program goes national.COURAGEOUS KIDS PROGRAM GOES NATIONAL
As a part of its Courageous Kids program, HUMMER dealers will provide children's hospitals nationwide with child-size, ride-on HUMMERs. Kids can now have a little fun as they "drive" into surgery and other medical procedures like X-Rays and MRI's.
In some cases, like Michigan's Mott Children's Hospital, it's only a few dozen steps from the pediatric waiting room to the surgery corridor. But making that trip aboard the little HUMMER has helped ease the children's fear and nervousness about surgery and minimized the stress of shuffling between rooms during their hospital stay.
Says Julie Piazza, a Child Life specialist at the hospital, "This (toy) can help the child understand that next step and help them feel supported." And of course, this mode of transportation beats a gurney ride any day.
The idea for the child-size HUMMER came from GM Shreveport employee, David Burroughs. His plant manager, Dave Gibbons, made it happen in 2005; two little HUMMERs were donated to the Christus Schumpert Sutton Children's Medical Center in Shreveport, La., where the Hummer H3 is produced.
After receiving rave reviews from the local hospital, HUMMER decided to expand the effort into a nationwide dealership donation program to children's hospitals.
OFF-ROAD SUCCESS
2007 season brings multiple wins for HUMMER Racing.HUMMER RACING STARTS GM'S 2007 RACING SEASON WITH MULTIPLE WINS
NASCAR Star Robby Gordon in HUMMER Trophy Truck Finishes Eighth Overall in Dakar Rally; Two SCORE International Stock Class Wins Claimed by HUMMER Racing
DETROIT: HUMMER Racing kicked off the 2007 racing season for GM on a high note with off-road success in all corners of the globe. The famous Dakar Rally, a 4915-mile grueling terrain race across Europe and Africa, ended yesterday with American Robby Gordon and teammate Andy Grider finishing eighth overall in their HUMMER H3 Trophy Truck (out of 109 finishers). HUMMER Racing also had success last weekend at the season opening SCORE Laughlin Challenge in Nevada, where Rod Hall and sons Chad and Josh won in the Stock Full and Stock Mini classes driving production-based HUMMER trucks.
Gordon and Grider drove the Team Dakar USA Monster Energy/Toyo Tire HUMMER H3 through stages across 15 days to finish eighth overall. Their time of 52:57:44 was only 7:04:07 behind overall winners Stéphane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret.
"I'm impressed that we could be within a minute and a half of the best WRC Rally racers in the world," said Gordon after finishing stage 14. "It's been good. Andy's doing great job; the team has done an awesome job. We haven't had any mechanicals (failures) all through the rally. We've had a couple little 'misfires' where we've made some mistakes but we'll definitely be a stronger team when we come back again."
Gordon and Grider also won the sixth stage of the race, giving HUMMER its first stage win in the grueling event. The stage win is a first for an American team and an American manufacturer since the event's first running in 1979.
In the United States, HUMMER Racing took two class wins at the 13th annual SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge. In the mini-stock class, team owner Rod Hall (last year's SCORE International mini-stock champion) drove a HUMMER H3 to victory with son and five-time Baja 1000 winner Chad Hall, finishing the 48-mile course with a total time of 1 hour, 30 minutes, 45 seconds. Not only was this the first time HUMMER Racing competed in the Laughlin Challenge, it also marked the first race in which HUMMER Racing powered the H3 with the 2007 model year Vortec 3.7L inline five-cylinder engine.
"This was the first time we've competed in the Laughlin Desert Challenge with HUMMER Racing, but the H3 proved up to the task of delivering us another class victory," said Rod. "The combination of rough terrain and stretches of high-speed, wide open sandy areas gave us a great opportunity to demonstrate the versatile capabilities of the stock HUMMER H3."
Rod's eldest son Josh Hall also added to HUMMER Racing's wins last weekend. Fresh off a dominating full stock class victory at the infamous Baja 1000, Hall drove the #861 Full-Stock H2 SUV to a Full-Stock class victory finishing 6 minutes, 29 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor. Hall and the H2 finished third overall in their group, defeating all but two of the highly modified Class 7SX trucks in the grouping.
"This event gave us great an opportunity to showcase the true off-road capabilities of the stock H2. Not only were we able to beat everyone in our class, the H2 proved better at conquering the course than the highly modified trucks in our grouping," said Josh. "It's even more amazing that we needed very little prep on the race truck following last year's grueling Baja 1000."
With their SCORE victories, HUMMER Racing extends its 20-race podium streak in North American racing, with victories at every race last year, including the SCORE Baja 500 and 1000. The brand has also made history with its Dakar success. Within the short span of three weeks, HUMMER's 2007 racing success has given the brand even more credibility as true off-road machines.

Hummer H3 Adventure
Base price: $30,875 Years on the list: 1st
For the vehicle that we want to drive every day on our commute, take our friends out to a nice evening on the town, and - most importantly - tackle Telluride or Moab, the Hummer H3 is our choice. It may be a bit underpowered, but you won't notice that too much when you are crawling over boulders in low range.
What makes the H3 so good are its oh-so-perfect size, 33-inch Bridgestone tires, 4.56:1 gears, rear locker, excellent ground clearance and angles, optional 4.00:1 transfer case, factory rock protection, and a price that even a magazine editor could almost afford. Get it with the stick to keep the engine on the boil, and the H3 will reward you with a rated 20 mpg on the highway.
As we've written before, this is one of the few vehicles we don't feel guilty using in the dirt, and most of us on staff would consider adding one to our garage.

Hummer H2
Base price: $53,855 Years on the list: 2nd
Before some of you press the "send" button on that hate mail to the Editor, let us convince you that the H2 really deserves to be on this list. Don't believe us?
Look at these credentials: Optional 35s from the factory, a locker, excellent approach and departure angles, beefy tow shackles, four-wheel drive with low-rang, and rocker protection. Still don't believe us?
Check out www.fourwheeler.com/h2our, where we took our long-term H2 SUT cross country and wheeled it across nine states in nine days without one breakdown. In all fairness, the H2 really is great on the trail, if a bit big, and it is smooth and quiet out on the highway.
What other SUV is out there that you can get all of that - plus a bed, if that's what you need? The Hummer H2 is one big boy that is tough to beat - just make sure you have room on that gas card.

We're proud of the accomplishments of Rod Hall and the rest of HUMMER Racing and we look forward to another successful season of off-road racing.
HUMMER CONTINUES AID TO DISASTER RELIEF EFFORTS
HUMMER extends loan of 12 H3s to State of Louisiana.HUMMER will extend its loan of 12 H3 vehicles to the state of Louisiana for another year to help with relief efforts in communities devastated by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Back in September of 2005, General Motors and HUMMER provided 12 H3 SUVs to Louisiana to help with their relief efforts. GM engineers also trained state workers and volunteers to safely and properly operate the H3s in on- and off-road situations. To further help their mission, the H3s were equipped with the full range of OnStar assistance services.
The H3's have since worked like tireless volunteers. The vehicles have been used by police, fire and National Guard members to deliver desperately needed supplies in search-and-rescue missions, to gain access to stranded victims, and to search areas that could not have been reached in a vehicle without the H3's extreme off-road capabilities.

SCHOOL'S IN. AND IT STARTS WITH SCIENCE CLASS.
HUMMER explores alternative fuel options with the development of a hydrogen powered H2H.SCHOOL'S IN. AND IT STARTS WITH SCIENCE CLASS. INTRODUCING THE HYDROGEN HUMMER.
HYDROGEN HUMMER RELEASED. SUV CATEGORY GOES TO SCHOOL.
The world really is moving toward a hydrogen economy, and nothing could serve to crystallize that point more than a hydrogen-powered version of one of the most popular and most polarizing vehicles in the world, the HUMMER H2.
At least that's the hope of General Motors with the release of the hydrogen-powered HUMMER H2H.
Created in association with the Governor's Office of California and California based Quantum Technologies, General Motors aims to use the H2H to draw attention to the possibilities of hydrogen vehicles. The goal is learning to improve the technology, to encourage its proliferation and to move toward the fulfillment of the California's Hydrogen Highways Initiative.
A behind-the-lab look at the most technologically advanced HUMMER yet - the Hydrogen powered H2H.
Based on the extremely popular HUMMER H2 SUT, the bed portion of the H2H is covered by a composite tonneau cover, giving it a slant back appearance. That, coupled with the Laser Blue paint, exclusive to the H2H, means you will be able to instantly differentiate it from the rest of the HUMMER line.
But the heart of the story is, of course, under the hood. The H2H is powered by the same Vortec 6000 utilized in all H2's, except that the injection system is configured to effectively deliver a hydrogen/air mixture instead of a mix of air and conventional fuel.
The science of this results in decreased horsepower, which the H2H compensates for with the addition of a supercharger, making the total output approximately 180HP.
Three, 350-bar, carbon fiber, hydrogen fuel tanks enable the H2H to carry roughly 12lbs (5.5kg) of fuel, which allows the truck a trip distance of about 60 miles between fill-ups. And, like every HUMMER before it the H2H is fully off-road capable.
The H2H has been used by engineers, designers, educators and students since the end of October 2004.H
THE 2006 H3
The newest member of the HUMMER family has proven itself a worthy extension of the proudest off-road name in the world.THE 2006 H3.
THE NEWEST MEMBER OF THE HUMMER FAMILY.
Like each of its predecessors, the H3 is fully off-road capable. But its smaller package makes it more nimble in the city than any HUMMER before it. Featuring a potent Vortec 3500 engine, the H3 offers a choice of automatic or manual transmission. And, in case there was any doubt, it also boasts off-road features that live up to its illustrious family name. Like its electronically controlled four-wheel drive system and underbody shielding that comes standard with any H3. Fully locking rear differential and Stabilitrack Vehicle stability enhancement are also available as additional features.
The H3 has been tested on the most severe off-road terrain and the toughest off-road challenges possible. Its own family. And has proven itself a worthy extension of the proudest off-road name in the world. HUMMER.
The H3 will premiere on the Auto Show Circuit this year and will be in dealerships late spring of 2005. But if you'd like to know more about it before then, simply enter your details and we'll send you information about features, pricing, availability and other H3 updates as they become available.H
HUMMER AND THE AMERICAN RED CROSS TEAM UP TO CREATE HOPE
HUMMER owners to help provide an even better disaster response infrastructure.TWO HANDS ARE BETTER THAN ONE
THE STORY
Two hands are better than one. Two people or two groups helping each other and playing off each other's strengths can accomplish more together than they can alone. This precept has never proven truer than in Beckley, West Virginia.
A group of nearly 100 HUMMER owners happened to be in the area for a scheduled HUMMER Club off-road trail driving event when the town was overrun with floods. Members heard about the difficulties that the American Red Cross was facing in attempting to administer relief aid through disaster-stricken communities. Barriers like fallen trees and other obstructions made it very difficult for relief vehicles to reach victims. HUMMER owners realized that they were in a unique position to provide transport where no other vehicle would suffice.
The owners met with the Red Cross workers to offer use of their all-terrain vehicles to help get people and supplies in and out of the disaster-stricken area. Due to potential liability issues, the Red Cross had to turn down the offer.
The owners' frustrated efforts inspired The HUMMER Club, Inc., to look for a way to partner with the Red Cross and the concept of HOPE was born.
THANKS TO HOPE, COMMUNITIES AROUND THE COUNTRY ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO RECEIVE THE HELP THEY NEED FASTER AND MORE CONSISTENTLY THAN EVER BEFORE.
TWO HANDS ARE BETTER.
HOPE stands for HUMMER Owners Prepared for Emergencies. The purpose of HOPE is to allow HUMMER owners who are members of the HUMMER Club, Inc. to become specially certified by the Red Cross, enabling them to use their vehicles and act as volunteers in disaster relief efforts. The HUMMER Club, Inc. members will also provide off-road driving training to owners and Red Cross relief workers.
The HUMMER Club, Inc. is made up of about 1,500 HUMMER enthusiasts. Mike Morris, national coordinator for HOPE described the group, "They are people who enjoy using the capabilities of their vehicles to help others."
Now, uniquely capable relief teams will be available and, thanks to HOPE, communities around the country are going to be able to receive the help they need faster and more consistently than ever before. H

THE 2006 H1 ALPHA THE BEST JUST GOT BETTER
HUMMER never let go of their goal of developing better and more efficient ways to cross open land.THE 2006 H1 ALPHA
Everybody has a passion and that passion produces action. What drives HUMMER? Their passion is to create the most off-road capable truck in the world. Stated another way, HUMMER's passion is to make it possible for people to cross Earth. Some vehicles get you there by air, some by water, HUMMER's vehicles help you get there by land. That's why they created the H1.
The creation of the H1 signaled the triumph of the most capable truck on the planet. Areas that seemed impenetrable were suddenly opened. True, the impetus for the H1 was a military application, but, like many military applications before it, its benefits go far beyond its original purpose. Emergency relief could now reach emergencies more easily. Medicine could be transported to more remote regions. The definition of impossible changed.
Usually competition or necessity drives people to improve on the best. However, competition wasn't the inspiration for them to try and improve the H1. Passion was. HUMMER never let go of their goal of developing better and more efficient ways to cross open land. But how could you possibly improve the H1?
INTRODUCING THE H1 ALPHA
Using the original H1 as a model, HUMMER engineers worked to create a truck that could do even more and go even farther. HUMMER is proud to introduce the Alpha Series.
"Alpha represents HUMMER performance taken to the next level," says Susan Docherty, HUMMER General Manager. "That means improving HUMMER's already-unmatched off-road capability along with enhancing driving comfort on the road."
HUMMER made sure the H1 was the best off-road vehicle in existence. And it was. Until they made a commitment to make it better.
They made improvements wherever the newest technological advances led them. That includes bringing a new engine, transmission, and suspension into the H1. HUMMER pushed themselves to make the best off-road truck in the world better.
THE BETTER THE ENGINE, THE BETTER THE PERFORMANCE.
Power is the heart of any off-roading machine. The more you want to see, the more you want to do, the more power you're going to need. The new H1 Alpha features a Duramax 6600 delivering 300 hp at 3000 rpm. That is a 46 percent increase in power over the original H1. In addition, the H1 Alpha features a revised fuel system holding an extra 9.5 gallons.
ABSOLUTE POWER REQUIRES ABSOLUTE CONTROL
HUMMER knows better than most that power is nothing without an effective means of controlling it. That's why the H1 Alpha features a new Allison 1000 transmission giving the H1 Alpha a dramatic increase in torque. That's how the H1 Alpha now generates 520 ft-lbs at 2500 rpm.
Taken from medium and heavy-duty commercial trucks, the Allison 1000 transmission is both solid and durable. The perfect compliment for the H1 Alpha's power increase.
Featuring a 5-speed automatic, the Allison 1000 keeps the H1 Alpha smooth and steady even in severe off-road maneuvers. And while you're driving, an independent double "A" frame suspension with open-end coil springs and hydraulic shock absorbers provide you and your passengers with a smooth and steady ride, off-road or on-road. In addition, the brake rotors were enlarged to compensate for the increased weight and power.
The H1 Alpha lands in dealerships early 2005.H
ADDITIONAL SPECS
Off-road prowess and climbing ability increased.
Premium leather seating surfaces.
The 2006 H1 Alpha will be offered in both Open Top and Wagon models.
COMPETITION WASN'T THE INSPIRATION FOR THEM TO TRY AND IMPROVE THE H1. PASSION WAS.
A TALE OF TWO TRAILS
HUMMER OWNERS COME TOGETHER TO SUPPORT THE ENVIRONMENT
HUMMER owners in Northern Michigan head to remote Drummond Island to clean up trails and introduce HUMMER Helps. The scene was remote Drummond Island in Northern Michigan. Its 136 square miles include everything from cedar swamps to rock ledges, prairie meadows to hardwood groves, rocky shores to sandy beaches ... and one unsightly behemoth only a HUMMER could tame.
Two missions converged: clean up the trails on this magnificent island and introduce HUMMER Helps, a new initiative from GM HUMMER to recognize those who use HUMMERs for acts of humanity and to sustain outdoor recreation areas.
After all, no one worth their HUMMER wanted to unveil HUMMER Helps in a conference room. It had to happen on the trails amidst what inspired it in the first place: HUMMER owners dedicating their time and vehicles for the good of all.
ENTER THE ECO-TRAIL CHALLENGE
When Rick Schmidt, International HUMMER Owner Group (IHOG) Coordinator, first conceived the idea for a community service event on Drummond Island he never imagined it would also serve as a backdrop for GM HUMMER's momentous announcement.
"THE ECO-TRAIL CHALLENGE SAYS A LOT ABOUT THE KIND OF PEOPLE HUMMER OWNERS ARE. THEY HAVE A GREAT RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND SEEK TO MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD AROUND US."
Schmidt had contacted several civic groups on the island to see what contribution HUMMER owners could make. "The [Drummond Island] community loved the fact that we came to them to discuss a possible event," explains Schmidt. They tossed around a lot of service ideas, but soon focused on two trails where old vehicles had been stranded and left to rust and collect litter. It was a challenge they believed a HUMMER could handle: extract a 6,000-pound vehicle without damaging the trail.
Schmidt consulted with Jeff Maes, product development manager - GM HUMMER. Excitement about the event grew as owners and the GM HUMMER team brainstormed ways to make the event successful for everyone. Ultimately, the Boy Scouts and the environmental education and conservation group Tread Lightly!® were invited on board.
EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS
Participants came from across the Midwest and as far away as California. They drove their HUMMERs - 10 H1s and 34 H2s - over the Mackinac Bridge, then traveled the coast of the Upper Peninsula to its easternmost point to catch the Drummond Island Ferry. All day Friday through pre-dawn Saturday HUMMERS boarded the ferry on a one-mile journey across the St. Mary River.
After weaving their way to the only stop light on the island, the HUMMERs headed north to a rustic paradise - the Frank Lloyd Wright-style Drummond Island Resort and Conference Center. This 2,000-acre, first-class resort offers all kinds of activities - but this weekend would be about trail restoration.
Bright and early Saturday morning, everyone assembled for breakfast and a press conference before breaking into teams to tackle the trails. Mike DiGiovanni, general manager - GM HUMMER, addressed the crowd and said, "I'm here today to announce two new initiatives from HUMMER." First, he unveiled 'HUMMER Helps." He described it as a grass roots effort designed to recognize HUMMER owners and other individuals connected with HUMMER who have used the vehicle's capability for acts of humanity and to sustain the lands where outdoor enthusiasts enjoy off-road activities.
Next, DiGiovanni announced a new partnership with Tread Lightly! "HUMMERs are purpose-built vehicles with superior off-road capability and many of our owners work to protect the environment for future use," he said. DiGiovanni then presented Executive Director Lori Davis with a $100,000 endowment check to be administered as a grant-giving initiative under their Restoration for Recreation program. The aim is to promote socially responsible four-wheeling, educate the public and enhance outdoor recreation areas.
WALKING THE TALK
Attention then turned to the day's work, which would include clean-up efforts on two off-roading trails. A safety presentation emphasized that this adventure would involve extensive rock crawling. Drivers were informed that they should not straddle rocks; rather, ride the tires gently over them. They were advised to keep a tight formation and travel between 2 - 5 mph. They were told that every vehicle must have a CB radio for vehicle-to-vehicle communication and that each team would have designated lead and tail vehicles.
Basic instruction out of the way, the trail leaders stepped up. Steve Walker, president of the Drummond Island Off-Road Club, would lead the red team with co-pilot Maes. Their mission was to extract an old International Harvester, circa 1950, that had been abandoned alongside a trail. The team would rely on Lori Davis and Jill Scott from Tread Lightly, Fred Chin, chairman of The HUMMER Club, Inc. and Henry C. Smith, III, president of The HUMMER Club, Inc., for trail restoration expertise. Also on board was a three-man extraction team of HUMMER engineers.
Deputy Sheriff Jerry Brown would guide the blue team with co-pilot Schmidt. They would clean up a landmark site where a vehicle had been junked. The old panel truck, as it was known, would remain in place since hunters and snowmobilers rely on it for direction. Dan Eakins, secretary and membership chairman of the The HUMMER Club Inc., was on board to lend his extensive driving, clean-up and restoration experience. The Boy Scouts were also on hand to assist the blue team, trash bags and gloves in hand.
LEAVING BEHIND A BETTER PLACE
After an hour on the trail, the blue team arrived at the old panel truck. True to the description given by island residents, the sight was indeed an eyesore. Years of litter and abuse had rendered the makeshift landmark a dangerous collection of broken glass, rusting metal cans and trash.
Over the next two hours the blue team filled an estimated 20 to 25 giant bags with debris, including old lawnchairs, empty food cans, broken glass, parts from the old panel truck - even an old car heater. IHOG member Roberta Beauchamp remembers, "We completely cleaned up the visible debris then started to find more junk ..."
When the last bag had been heaved into the trash trailer, the team surveyed all they had accomplished. "This is what we came to do. It looked 100% better," recounts Eakins.
WINCH YOU WERE HERE
Meanwhile the red team arrived at the vehicle extraction site. There sat the rusting, 6,000-pound International Harvester, glass blown out, bullet holes in the bumper, tires wedged between boulders.
The GM extraction team of John Turzewski, Greg Ward and Eddie Todd connected straps and lines to the vehicle and began the heavy work. The old wreck was nearly perpendicular to the trail. In preparation, two H2s were lined up; the second one outfitted with a front-end winch.
Ward explained the plan Turzewski had masterminded to the rest of the team. First, a line was threaded from the winch through the rear bar on the H2 ahead of it and attached the end to the International Harvester. Ward wrapped a piece of carpet over the line to help slow down inertia and fraying. Turzweski turned on the winch and eased the old beater up and over the rocks.
With the vehicle repositioned, only one HUMMER was needed to finish the job. Ward demonstrated a double rope pull technique that would double the power and the old Harvester was successfully guided wherever the H2 directed. The only sound was applause from the cheering crowd.
Tim Harmer of Flushing, Mich., was impressed. "I thought they'd pull and there would be a jolt or strain, but the winch just reeled it in effortlessly." A platform truck waited in the wings to relocate the extracted vehicle to a true dump on the island.
ALL IN A DAY'S WORK
As the day came to a close, attendees gathered at the township hall and celebrated with a hearty dinner prepared by the Moose and Lions Clubs. As a surprise for the children, the Tread Lightly! mascot, Lightfoot the Squirrel, stopped by for a visit. In addition, bids from a silent auction raised over $7,000 for a new Drummond Island fire truck.
The Drummond Island ECO-Trail Challenge had accomplished all of its objectives. It involved the community, identified a valuable service and restored trails.
"The ECO-Trail Challenge says a lot about the kind of people HUMMER owners are. They have a great respect for the environment and seek to make a positive difference in the world around us," said DiGiovanni.
The GM HUMMER endowment was given to Tread Lightly! to help make more events like this possible. For more information or to apply for a grant, contact Tread Lightly! at 1.800.966.9900 or go to treadlightly.org.
H2 SUT OPEN TO CHANGE
The newest evolution of the HUMMER brand takes open-air driving to the extreme and gives owners a whole new way to haul cargo.H2 SUT
OPEN TO CHANGE
Wind, sun and sky embrace you as you're cruising down the interstate on a glorious spring day. The fresh air is intoxicating. You're behind the wheel of a luxury convertible the street becomes an off-road trail and you realize you're actually driving something far better ...
Ahhh, the joy of H2 SUT. This newest evolution of the HUMMER brand takes open-air driving to the extreme and gives owners a whole new way to haul cargo*. The H2 SUT has the ability to go from luxury passenger ride, to cargo carrier, to the ultimate on-road/off-road convertible.
"The H2 SUT is really like a multipurpose tool," explains John Bagazinski, H2 SUT product manager - GM HUMMER. "It can be a lot of different things depending on what an owner wants and needs. Of course, luxury and performance are constants."
Answering The Call to Haul
Most obviously, H2 SUT is a truck. With five passengers in its well-appointed interior, it offers 30 cubic feet of open-air storage*. What HUMMER engineers also envisioned was the ability for owners to store wet or dirty items while keeping the cabin clean and dry.
THIS NEWEST EVOLUTION OF THE HUMMER BRAND TAKES OPEN-AIR DRIVING TO THE EXTREME AND GIVES OWNERS A WHOLE NEW WAY TO HAUL CARGO.
With truck bed features like drain holes and rubber mats "... you can just wash the back with a hose and the passenger compartment stays nice and clean," says Bagazinski.
This kind of functional flexibility is on the wish list of many potential owners according to John La Prest, general manager of Bergstrom HUMMER in Milwaukee, Wis. "People are attracted to its versatility and the distinctiveness of the vehicle itself. It's going to be another head-turner."
Expandable to Meet Your Needs
When there's a need to carry more cargo, H2 SUT can transform into an even bigger truck featuring a 4-foot by approximately 6-foot bed. Achieving this configuration takes just a few minutes and requires powering the rear window into the bulkhead and folding the rear seats and midgate forward. To secure cargo, the bed has four tie-down provisions, each capable of holding 500 pounds. For additional security there's a locking rear cargo box and available locking hard tonneau cover.
It's capabilities like these that have future owners making plans. Dr. Richard Kane, DVM, of Brandon, Fla., is already lined up for an H2 SUT. As a veterinarian, he travels from horse farm to horse farm. "I love riding in my H2," explains Kane, "but when I heard about H2 SUT ... I realized I can put all of my equipment in the back."
Ahhh... Fresh Air
H2 SUT can also go from a truck to a one-of-a-kind, open-air vehicle. Getting this convertible feeling takes just a press of a button to lower all side windows as well as the rear window. The standard sunroof can be opened to fully enjoy H2 SUT's take on open-air driving. Together with the Bose® sound system, H2 SUT becomes the ultimate cruising machine.
Special from the Outside In
H2 SUT's standard interior features Medium Wheat trimmed leather seats. There's also an Ebony leather trimmed interior in the lux edition of the SUT, with aluminum and chrome accents throughout.
As for the exterior, Marc Hernandez, Sales and Service director — GM HUMMER explains, "The SUT continues the styling theme established with H1 and refined with H2. It's an exterior that is bold, rugged, with linear shapes; flat, chiseled surfaces; hard peak lines; and sheer glass panes."
Bill Eichmann, HUMMER product manaer at Reeves HUMMER in Tampa, Fla., describes it this way, "H2 SUT is the next-in-line of attention getting vehicles."H

2003 HUMMER DRIVING ACADEMY REUNION
It's not very often you can have the time of your life twice. Unless, of course, you're a HUMMER Driving Academy graduate. It's not very often you can have the time of your life twice. Unless, of course, you're a HUMMER Driving Academy graduate. Last August 15 Academy graduates, along with their travel partners and a five-man AM General instruction team, gathered in Knoxville, Tennessee for an Academy reunion, dubbed "The Overhill Adventure".
"The reunions grew out of requests from people that had come to the Academy and were looking for more off-roading in the Academy style," according to HUMMER Driving Academy Chief Instructor, Tim Bonadies. This reunion event would provide an unforgettable five-day driving trek through some of the most challenging and beautiful off-roading locations east of the Mississippi.
All HUMMERs - eight H1s and seven H2s - received an "Academy inspection" the first night, in anticipation of the crevices, cracks, hills and hollows sure to come. The next morning the real adventure began as a convoy of HUMMERs headed 25 miles west to Windrock, arguably one of the best off-road locales in the eastern half of the United States.
Over the next four days, the group enjoyed numerous memorable off-roading experiences, including a journey to the Nantahala National Forest in the Smokey Mountains. The group followed the demanding course of the Tellico River through a high-elevation basin formed by the Unicoi Mountains.
"IT WAS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY AND I'LL PROBABLY DO IT AGAIN."
"Some of the trails were unbelievable. Tellico Trail was magnificent," remembers Naga Manohar, of Okemos, Mich. "All four days I just loved every bit of it. And we learned a lot too. Getting the vehicles over rocks was quite a challenge."
HUMMERs and drivers were further tested at an 8,000-acre off-roading paradise known as Kinzalow Trails. Owner Richard Kinzalow and his wife Joy surprised the group with a Tennessee-style BBQ for lunch.
The final day was reserved for Monteagle; one of the most diverse four-wheeling areas to be found anywhere including world-class rocks, hills and challenging wooded terrain
"I had a great time," says Nancy Turner, M.D., of Nashville, Tenn. "We had excellent support from Tim Bonadies and the instructors he brought with him."
"The variety of the terrain was nice," remembers John McCarey of Middletown, NY. There were mountains, creeks, rivers, and mud. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I'll probably do it again."
What's next? The time of your life - again! H

BORDER PATROL ENLISTS HUMMER
The HUMMER "takes us to places in soft sand or rocky terrain that we couldn't get to in standard service vehicles."The 76,000 square miles of desert along the U.S.-Mexican border is a cruel refuge. The sun beats down unmercifully, life-giving water is scarce and the populace is zero. Securing the borders in such an unforgiving terrain is the job of the United States Border Patrol and now HUMMER.
This mobile, uniformed, law enforcement arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, recently ordered 116 custom-equipped H1 2-door hardtops and 4-door wagons to patrol and protect the vast desert area that stretches from Central California down to the tip of Texas.
"The H1 has unmatched off-road ability and incredible toughness," explains Craig MacNab, director of Public Relations-AM General. "The ordinary 4-wheel-drive vehicle built for civilian use just isn't capable of taking the beating that terrain gives the vehicles."
HUMMERs support the Border Patrol's primary mission of detecting and apprehending illegal aliens and smugglers of aliens. According to U.S. Border Patrolman Pete Vasquez, the HUMMER "takes us to places in soft sand or rocky terrain that we couldn't get to in standard service vehicles."
"THE H1 HAS UNMATCHED OFF-ROAD ABILITY AND INCREDIBLE TOUGHNESS."
Officers who serve in HUMMERs took part in a specially designed educational program at AM General's test track in South Bend, Ind. They were instructed on proper off-roading techniques with the H1s and logged many miles over the infield obstacles and across hundreds of acres of man-made and natural obstacles, including hills, running water, mud and rough terrain.
More than 40 of the H1s are specialized for elite search and rescue trauma teams, called "BORSTAR" for Border Search, Training and Rescue. The teams, founded on the principle that protection of the borders includes saving lives, respond to incidents involving distressed agents and migrants in remote areas.
The bulk of the HUMMERs serve as enforcement units to patrol, intercept and take illegal aliens into custody. The 2-door hardtops also have containment units to carry people to the appropriate authori- ties.
Due to the severe desert climate, Daniel Sprick of the U.S. Border Patrol in Yuma, Ariz., explains "people we encounter experience heat exhaustion or near to it." The stricken immigrants, many of whom paid to be transported over the border and were then abandoned in the desert, are given first aid in the form of fluids and IVs until they can receive advanced medical care at another location.
Law enforcement expertise, emergency rescue skills and now HUMMER - an impressive combination in helping secure U.S. borders and saving lives. H

TIMID TO TRIUMPHANT:
THE HUMMER DRIVING ACADEMY EXPERIENCE
BY LESLIE SCHNEIDERThe HUMMER Driving Academy is a creative combination of boot camp, a high-ropes course and a luxury spa.
Glenn Varzari sits at the Academy welcome reception wondering aloud what he's doing here. The Leth- bridge, Alberta resident states he will never take his HUMMER off-road and this is all so out of charac- ter for him. That night, eleven HUMMER owners and I learned we were not alone in our apprehension. "I called my wife and told her, 'Honey, I think we're going off-roading,' and she said, 'What have they done to you?' "
GLENN VARZARI'S JOURNAL
It only intensifies the next afternoon as we study a 22-inch concrete wall at the AM General Test Track's infield obstacle course. After a plant tour and several hours of driving and recovery instruction, our first challenge is to take our AM General HUMMERs up the wall. "I don't do things like this," Varzari exclaims. "I'm a CPA!"
Each of us successfully negotiates not only the wall, but also mud-filled side slope moguls, huge boulders and a pool of water. That afternoon our world is turned upside down - literally. Transformed from timid to triumphant drivers, we are amazed that when we listen to the instructors and let the truck do the work it's actually easy.
"I CALLED MY WIFE AND TOLD HER, 'HONEY, I THINK WE'RE GOING OFF-ROADING,' AND SHE SAID, 'WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOU?'"
Since its 1998 launch, nearly 150 HUMMER owners have graduated from the HUMMER Driving Academy, held near AM General's headquarters in South Bend, Indiana. Academy students learn - from the experts - how to drive their mechanical wonders the way they were engineered to be driven - over a 60% grade - across a 40% side slope - through 30 inches of water... where almost no other vehicle can go.
The Academy was developed with the philosophy that an exceptionally capable truck is better served by an exceptionally capable driver. "We want owners to hear first hand how this vehicle should be operated," says Tim Bonadies, Commercial Training Manager and Director of the Academy. "It is important for HUMMER owners to see the full value of this vehicle."
"We spent four hours driving through water and mud holes and I'm having the time of my life. This truck is really unbelievable. And this was just the first day."
GLENN VARZARI'S JOURNAL DAY ONE - LEARNING THE FUNDAMENTALS
The HUMMER Driving Academy is a creative combination of boot camp, a high-ropes course and a luxury spa, which means that students both work hard and play hard. The first day, after a behind-the- scenes tour of the HUMMER plant, we head to the HUMMER Technical Center and Test Track. Every- one is eager to drive, but our ever-patient Academy instructors remind us we need to learn how to safely recover vehicles in difficult situations before venturing into rugged terrain.
Lessons abound. Don't stand too close to the winch - never step over the cables - be prepared. "You're dealing with thousands of pounds of energy," explains Test Track Administrator Brian Kroeger. "Most people who get hurt off-roading are hurt outside the truck."
Finally, it's time to get into one of six shiny, 2002 H1s to see what they - and we - can do. Since most of us are new to off-roading, we begin with the easy stuff, like the two-foot wall. We approach it at a 15- degree angle, taking it slowly and staying with it. The afternoon is both exhilarating and humbling. "I'm beginning to realize how much I don't know about my HUMMER," says Robert Deinarowicz Jr. of Blairs- town, New Jersey.
TRUST THE TRUCK
Once we pass through the infield obstacles, we head back through AM General's 320 acres of
manmade and natural obstacles with students in the front seats and amazingly calm instructors in the back. Here, we get an even deeper appreciation for the awesome capability of the 15-foot long, 7-foot wide trucks that are remarkably nimble when guided by a light, cultivated touch. We learn that driving
a HUMMER off-road isn't as much about muscle as it is finesse.
Heading toward an impossibly steep hill, Bob Penna of Boston laughs, "I wouldn't even walk up that hill. Too much work." But Penna stays constant on the throttle, clawing our way to the top as instructor Carl Giefing Jr. repeats the Academy's mantra, "Trust the truck".
I am nervous. Giefing tells me, "You'll be a good driver when you relax." By the end of the day, I am invincible.
BEYOND THE POSSIBLE
Possessing the perfect blend of professional and affable attitude, hand-picked Academy instructors serve as teachers, drill sergeants, cops and even instigators. Their most important role, however, is to coach us into - and out of - places we never believed we could go before. It's an adrenaline rush none of us will soon forget. "I had no idea," says Tim Riche of Calabasas, California. "I was completely surprised by the capability of the truck."
"I called my wife to report on the day's activities. I told her, 'I can do anything.' She's really worried now.
GLENN VARZARI'S JOURNAL DAY TWO - FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS
The next day, we learn more fundamentals, such as how to read a U.S. geological survey map, use a base plate compass and Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) navigation technology and how you still need a good map, even with GPS.
Then it's back to the trucks to put them and ourselves through increasingly difficult paces. First, we must ascend and then descend "The Rock Climb" - a "cliff" of boulders that several students renamed "Profanity Ridge". How do you describe what it's like to take an H1 down a steep, uneven wall of stone slabs while trusting your guide to signal you because you can't see the ground? It's simple. There is no way. Some things you just have to experience for yourself.
Most students are amazed at how comfortable it is to traverse up, over and down terrain with names like "Donner Pass", "The Continental Divide" and "Holy Cow Hill". Today our journeys are punctuated only by brief instruction, exclamations and comfortable, awed silence. At times, all you can hear is the click of the 3-point safety belts restraining our bodies as we travel through demanding terrain that is uneven, unpredictable and outrageous.
THE AMBIENCE OF A MUCK-HOLE
We head gingerly through acres of swampland - challenges aptly named "The Vacuum" and "The Abyss" with the windows open. "Ah, the ambience of a muck-hole," says instructor Ken Glennon. Then we crab-crawl through a canyon filled with loose sand where the right side of the truck is tipped so far over, you can reach out and pluck a root from the side of the cliff. I have a better idea of [my HUMMER's] capabilities... I feel confident of its performance. I look longingly at the hills & ditches as I drive around... I could maneuver through any of them. I know that my HUMMER and I can head off-road and WE WILL."
GLENN VARZARI'S JOURNAL
DAY THREE - THE COMPETITION
The last morning, we gather at the test track for crazy Olympic-like events. We're sworn to secrecy about the Driving Academy Olympics. What can be told is that the fun involves traffic cones, logs, sand hills, GPS units, three dozen eggs, blindfolds and a gigantic teeter-totter. Each of the events is also designed to teach students one or more lessons, according to Bill Thompson, Director of Fleet Sales and Commercial Services and the Academy's founder. "We want people to have fun, but also to learn how to think before they get into trouble."
EDUCATED CONFIDENCE
After days of soul-satisfying off-roading at the Academy, including sand operations at Silver Lake National Park on Lake Michigan, night vision technologies and field repairs, it's time to head back home to reality. Too soon, we receive our certificates of graduation. We leave surprised, humbled and amazed at all we've learned and experienced. We are grateful for having been clever enough to brave this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If you plan to attend an Academy soon, rest up, pack your boots and fasten your safety belt. It's going to be a wild drive. H

General Motors and AM General remind off-road drivers to respect the privilege of driving on public lands and to follow the guidelines established by the Tread Lightly! program. Maneuvers shown and described here showcase the extraordinary capabilities of the HUMMER vehicle. Representatives of AM General and its HUMMER Driving Academy were on hand to coach and assist drivers. You should not attempt these maneuvers without proper training.
WHAT MAKES THE H2 THE REAL DEAL
One look at the new H2 and you see we've paid tribute to the classic, fiercely utilitarion HUMMER design.H2 OH WOW!
WHAT MAKES H2 THE REAL DEAL
BY KEN LINDENSMITH
It's been called the "Son of HUMMER", but there's nothing small or juvenile about it. Like its older sibling the HUMMER H1 - indisputably the rugged off-roading icon - the new HUMMER H2 is an exhilarating, uncompromising off-road vehicle, unlike any other SUV...
From day one, we knew the H2 had to have real HUMMER DNA. It had to have the extreme design and brand recognition of the H1. It had to maintain off-road leadership. It also had to be the perfect vehicle for everyday use, with the ruggedness refined and creature comforts abounding.
One look at the new H2 - from any angle - and you see we've paid tribute to the classic, fiercely utilitarian HUMMER design - from the flat planes of the windows to the huge wheel openings and unusually large and hefty bumpers.
TOUGH TERRAIN? A WALK IN THE PARK.
Back when the H2 was in early prototype stage, we took it through Moab, Utah and the Rubicon Trail - considered the ultimate off-road challenge. The 14-mile, two-day trip over an old wagon trail in California's Sierra Nevadas is fraught with steep slopes, large boulders and treacherous, rocky ruts. We weren't going forward on the project until the H2 could conquer it.
FROM DAY ONE, WE KNEW THE H2 HAD TO HAVE REAL HUMMER DNA.
Imagine our joy when the H2 traversed the Rubicon the equivalent of 10 times without a single walk-home failure. Through it all, we've learned a tremendous amount from ultra-severe terrain, our AM General partners and H1 owners - all of whom kept our focus on what HUMMER is all about.
Off-road, the H2 is capable of fording 20 inches of water, climbing 16-inch steps and rocks, grinding through deep sand and mastering high-speed desert runs. Many factors contribute to its outstanding mobility, including:
- A solid, heavy-duty structure and design
- Extensive underbody protection
- Road-and-trail-gripping traction systems
- Durable, sure-footed suspension systems
- A strengthened drivetrain
- Powerful performance
WATER AND BOULDERS AND SAND, OH YEAH!
One of the most important factors for off-roading is ground clearance. We designed the H2 with large approach and departure angles, allowing it to drive right into a hole and out again without getting hung up in the front or rear. The H2 also has a large breakover angle, which means you can drive up and over boulders without getting hung up in the middle.
Even with high ground clearance, many hardcore off-roaders tend to beat up the underside of their vehicles, so we added all kinds of rock-defying underbody protection, including:
- Rocker protection that's mounted to the frame
- A robust front skid shield
- An intermediate ladder shield
- A transfer case shield
- A fuel tank shield
TRACTION TO THE EXTREME
Traction is another key factor to off-roading and the H2 is designed to make the most of it. For example, the H2 features BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A tires with an extremely wide footprint that distributes energy more evenly for greater traction.
The H2 also has a new Borg-Warner 2-speed electrically controlled full-time 4WD transfer case. The transfer case can reduce the H2's gear ratio by 2.64:1 to help with obstacle climbing.
The 4WD system works in conjunction with a highly developed Bosch antilock braking system/traction control system (ABS/TCS) that adapts to the transfer case selection. H2 drivers have enough traction on a single tire to move the truck up a 10-percent grade while the other three wheels have no traction. The system also features a TC2 function that allows for more wheel slip in the traction control mode during sand and desert-running conditions.
AN ADAPTABLE TRUCK, FROM BOULDER TO BYWAY
In total, the H2 offers seven different driving selections to give drivers the ability to match the H2's performance with a variety of driving conditions.
The H2 suspension system includes an independent front torsion bar and rear coil spring that provide excellent ride comfort and control on-road as well as a high degree of strength, control and rear-axle articulation off-road.
H2 owners planning to do some serious off-roading may choose the optional self-leveling rear air spring suspension system. It's tuned for H2's severe off-road requirements and includes a dual-purpose air compressor that allows drivers to raise ride height with the flip of a switch.
TRUE OFF-ROAD PERFORMANCE
A new Vortec 6000 V8 engine will pump the lifeblood of the H2. It produces an estimated 316 horsepower and 360 lb.-ft. of torque. But this new engine is more than muscle. We balanced this extreme power to help make smooth cruising on the highway as natural as climbing fallen logs in the woods.
The powertrain adapts to the terrain. When the H2 is on the highway and the transfer case is in High mode, acceleration is normal. But when it's off-road in Low mode, the system actually flattens the throttle response so it's not too touchy, allowing drivers more precise control of engine speed - and the vehicle.
THE BEAUTY IN THE BEAST
H2 has been designed to provide new levels of civilized refinement not previously found in anything that approaches this vehicle's capacity for outstanding off-road performance.
Drivers can get directions at the push of a button or talk hands-free on a voice-activated cell phone while seated in their power seat. H2 is capable of comfortably seating up to six people. No matter where it's driven, H2 is highly civilized. Its on-pavement manners, including ride comfort, are extremely refined.
It also provides all the amenities a premium SUV customer would want, such as:
- Optional leather seating surfaces with heat in front cushions and seatbacks as well as second-row cushions
- Dual-zone front temperature controls
- Standard Bose premium sound system
- Standard OnStar system (with a one year safe and sound service plan)
- Triple-sealed doors and deluxe acoustical insulation
- A huge sunroof (optional)
The HUMMER H2 is an amazing vehicle. But don't take my word for it. When you drive one you'll see that the H2 is a true HUMMER - both in looks and in performance.
Above all, H2 had to strike instant recognition as a HUMMER. The end result is that GM designers captured the essential proportions of H1 and the signature features of its fiercely utilitarian design of square shapes, flat chiseled surfaces, hard peak lines and flat glass planes. H
FIVE CLIMATES IN 12 DAYS
That was the mandate. And there's only a handful of places that allow you to do that. Top of that list: Chile.NOTES FROM A CHILEAN EXCURSION
FIVE CLIMATES IN TWELVE DAYS. That was the mandate. And there's only a handful of places that allow you to do that. Top of that list: Chile.
The country's width brings you from sea level to 15,200 ft. in just 80 miles. And its 3,456 miles of length takes you from the Tropic of Cancer, with its blistering deserts and salt flats, past the vineyards and rainforests of Central Chile, all the way down to the nearly uninhabited south, just one layer of thermal clothing away from Antarctica.
There's no better way to understand the HUMMER H1 experience than to drive one in a place like this. So that's exactly what the factory team did on a mission to come home with images that capture the true essence of a HUMMER. Following are just some of the feelings expressed along the way.
"You start out wondering, why is this truck so big? Then you get it out here with mountains, boulders, 1,000 ft. drop-offs at the side of some abandoned mining road and you start thinking, you know what, it's actually just about the right size. Because if it were any smaller it wouldn't stand a chance."
THERE'S NO BETTER WAY TO UNDERSTAND THE HUMMER H1 EXPERIENCE THAN TO DRIVE ONE IN A PLACE LIKE THIS.
"Now we know why next to nothing on this truck is optional anymore. From the brush guard to the air compressor to the drivetrain protection, it's simply not smart to come out here without every single thing this truck has. I couldn't imagine it."
"The terrain is so scary, and so hard, you just keep thanking the H1 designers. Then you get to the top, the sun breaks over the mountains, and everything is yellow and everybody gasps and sees how incredible the world really is. And at that moment it's all worth it. Then everybody gets on the SatPhone and calls their mother." H
HALL & SONS VICTORIOUS AT SCORE BAJA 1000
Rod Hall celebrates his 65th birthday with a win in the SCORE Baja 1000.After just over 24 hours and 1017 bone-crushing miles of desert racing, Team HUMMER's Josh Hall took the checkered flag in La Paz, Mexico earlier today to claim the Full Stock Production Class victory in the 35th annual SCORE Baja 1000. This win marks the second consecutive Baja 1000 champion- ship for Team HUMMER which has won this internationally recognized event six times since 1993 when HUMMER began competitive off-road racing. Team owner Rod Hall, who drove the first 230 miles to Puertocitos, celebrated his 65th birthday behind the wheel of the H1 Pickup during the race on Friday. "My lucky number for the rest of the year will be 65-35-17,' said Hall. "I turned 65 while driving in my 35th consecutive Baja 1000 and have won this event 17 times since the first Baja 1000 in 1967.' It would appear that rumors of the legendary Hall's retirement have been greatly exaggerated.
Chad Hall, who took over from Rod and drove the second leg to San Juanico, said the truck had only one problem, a strange electrical issue which caused the transmission to shift erratically. "About 15 miles into the race, the truck began to pop into neutral whenever Rod gave it too much gas. After I took over the problem persisted and finally went into neutral permanently at Coco's Corner, about 300 miles into the race.
THIS WIN MARKS THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE BAJA 1000 CHAMPIONSHIP FOR TEAM HUMMER.
I'm no transmission expert,' observed Chad, "but after working on the transmission wiring harness for about 10 minutes, I was able to get it to default into third gear only operation. Our new motor was giving us lots of low-end torque so third gear was good enough to get us back in the race although our top speed was now limited to 67 M.P.H. and we had dropped to second place during the repair.'
South of Guerro Negro, at about the half-way point, Chad came across a number of vehicles hopelessly stuck in an 'S' bend section of a riverbed which, over time had cut itself five or six feet below the surface of the surrounding terrain. Dominated by huge cactus bushes on all sides, none of the trucks seemed to be able to find a way out. Relying on the legendary HUMMER 4-wheel drive technology, Chad was able to put the truck in lo-loc and power his way up over the walls of the riverbed and back into first place leaving those behind him to ponder the wisdom of having built 2-wheel drive off-road race trucks.
Under the Baja Harvest Moon the road to San Juanico (RM 655) and the final driver change was littered with race vehicles of every size and description
mired in the silt beds outside of San Ignacio as deep as a snow drift. It was an eerie sight seeing the midnight glow of the full moon dance off the driver's helmets as they struggled to free themselves from the choking haze of the siltbed.
The silt posed no problem for Team HUMMER, however and at San Juanico, Chad handed the truck over to brother, Josh who took it the final distance to finish almost four hours in front of the next vehicle in class. At the end of the marathon event, it turned out to be another great victory for Team HUMMER and a memorable birthday celebration for the entire Hall family! H

The nimble, innovative HUMMER HX concept introduced itself to the world at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. With its unmistakable HUMMER design and compact, go-anywhere drivability, it was clear the HUMMER HX reset the bar of traditional off-road vehicles.
The HX marks an evolution of the HUMMER brand, in its small, reconfigurable interior and exterior. The open-air, modular, two-door off-road vehicle is the product of three new innovative minds at GM, designers David Rojas, Min Young Kang and Robert Jablonski. Fresh out of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, the three designers first test at GM was to design a HUMMER concept that would provide a vision for the future design of off-road vehicles.
The vehicle is unique to the world of off-roading with its convertible body, aeronautically inspired interior, and off-road ready power. And of course, the HX comes standard with unmatched off-road capability and distinctive styling, the hallmarks of the HUMMER brand.
Choose from the sections below to get an in-depth look at what sets the HX apart.

AGILE ADAPTABILITY
More compact than the HUMMER H3 at 81 inches wide, with a 103-inch wheelbase, the HX concept maintains the off-road capability that’s made HUMMER legendary. However, it’s what’s on the outside that sets this vehicle apart.
With its maneuverable body, the HX offers an open-air driving experience that can acclimate to specific trail conditions, cargo needs and passenger whims. The driving experience can be modified via a pair of removable roof panels above the driver and front passenger, and a modular, removable rear-roof assembly.
With the roof panels and roof assembly removed, the HX is transformed into a true convertible. This versatile vehicle can also be configured as an SUT, a stylish slant-back, and a traditional wagon-like design.
Additional ingenuous features of the HX include removable doors and removable fender flares, perfect for improved flexibility and maneuverability on the trail.

PURPOSEFUL EXTERIOR
Inside and out, the HX carries a purposeful aesthetic with its beauty lying in its functional austerity.
On the exterior, its lightweight body is evidenced by the appearance of exposed, billet aluminum suspension components that feature CNC-machined lightening relieves, as well as clean, unadorned bodywork and mini
